Do you wake up feeling tired, even after you’ve gotten a full night’s rest? Are your loved ones complaining about your snoring? Do you struggle with productivity or experience frequent headaches and sluggishness throughout the day? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, you or your loved one may be suffering from sleep apnea and may be in need of dental treatment.
What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where the patient stops breathing while they are asleep. These “stops” can be a second or two or can be several minutes. While a patient with sleep apnea is asleep, the muscles in their throat relax too much, causing the airway to collapse. When the brain fails to get the oxygen that it needs, it responds by waking the patient up just enough to re-open the airway. Sleep apnea patients can wake up hundreds of times during the night without realizing it. The loss of oxygen and the lack of sleep can cause serious, and sometimes life-threatening health problems if it isn’t treated.
